Whose Side Is God On?
by Christine Emmert
Men with a mission? Men talking to God? Do we need such men? For the answer to this question, please turn on the television and watch the images with your own shock and awe.
Both parties in this war claim God as their touchstone. Maybe they should have listened to Bob Dylan's wonderful take on that in his song, God on Our Side. This particular piece ended with the observation, "If God's on our side, He'll stop the next War."
I don't remember a time when a president has listened less to the people who elected him (although Richard Nixon runs a close second). Actually, maybe he IS listening to the people who elected him, since most of us voted not to.
In his version of Christianity, there is no blessing the meek for they shall inherit the earth or loving those who hate you. It is that muscular out-of-date Christianity that made Victorians into soldiers for Christ. Of course, that was before the days of needing big oil interests which only (forgive the pun) adds fuel to his fire.
As for myself, I don't claim to talk to God. I do, perhaps, listen to God. Therein lies the difference.
